I'm recommending this genius little book but I'm pissed I'm just now hearing about it!
How... How (!!!!)am I hearing about this book five years after the fact? I am the actual freaking target audience: Black as Mary Mack, a nerd and super problematic.
You wanna how I heard about this book written for me and my kind? From a promo email for a graphic novel written by a White Australian woman about gay white male rivals fencers at an elite private school – which okay, I have to admit sounds fire and I definitely will pre-order a copy. But why didn't I get the promo about the Blackety Black blerd book!!! I like essays. Hanif Adurraquib is a blerd with whom I'm totallyobsessed. But also I am a blerd who wrote an actual book of essays... about racism and the bible and the White Church. So not a fun. But still...
Anyway if you are a nerd of any race, gender or persuasion, Marvel or DC, Star Wars or Star Trek... get this book. It's funny and cozy and stupidly clever. It's the Pharrell of Blackety Black essays on nerd culture. (Yes, I'm talking about that Pharrell. Who is a big ole skater nerd. Even was part of band called N.E.R.D.) This book is cool and happy like him.
Listen to some of the titles of these essays:
--Raising the Avatar: No One Woman of Color Should Have All Them Haters
--How My Black Ass Would Survive Every Horror Movie
--An Open Letter to the Starks: Y’all Should’ve Taken Better Care of Your Direwolves
--Green Lantern Comics Have Low-Key Been Tackling Police Accountability for a Minute
See? Black... cool... happy. Pharrell.
I'm just playing.
This book is excellent. All nerds should read it.
